چکیده

INTRODUCTION This manuscript is a synthesis of major ideas presented at the Upland Oak Ecology Symposium held October 7–10, 2002, in Fayetteville, AR. More than 350 managers, scientists, landowners, and others gathered to discuss problems and opportunities common to upland oak (Quercus spp.) forests, focusing mainly on forests of the Interior Highlands. However, much of the information contained is applicable to upland oak forests in general. This paper highlights common threads among symposium papers and incorporates additional supporting information to help link the full range of ideas presented.

Spatial and temporal patterns of eastern white pine regeneration in the northwestern Ohio oak stand

115 Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was often associated with oaks (Quercus spp.) on upland sites in presettlement forests of the upper Great Lakes region, but widespread logging and subsequent fires in the late 1800s converted these upland sites to fire-tolerant oak forests. Although white pine regeneration is occurring in these second-growth oak forests, white pine regeneration patterns...

Developing a Stand Hazard Index for Oak Decline in Upland Oak Forests of the Ozark Highlands, Missouri

Black oak (Quercus velutina Lam.) and scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea Muenchh.)—two major components (44% of total stand basal area) of upland oak forests—are suffering severe decline and mortality in the Ozark Highlands, Missouri. However, factors influencing their survival (mortality) are not well understood. In this study we quantified how stand and tree-level predisposing factors are associat...

Prescribing Fire in Eastern Oak Forests: Is Time Running Out?

Before European settlement, vast areas of the eastern US deciduous forest were dominated by oak species. Evidence indicates that periodic understory fire was an important ecological factor in the historical development of oak forests. During European settlement of the late 19th and early 20th century, much of the eastern United States was impacted by land-clearing, extensive timber harvesting, ...

Roles of land-use and climate change on the establishment and regeneration dynamics of Mediterranean semi-deciduous oak forests

Long-term changes in climate and land use have significant effects on the forest dynamics in formerly managed landscapes. To quantify the relative importance of climatic and land-use factors on tree est...

Regime Shifts and Weakened Environmental Gradients in Open Oak and Pine Ecosystems

Fire suppression allows tree species that are intolerant of fire stress to increase their distribution, potentially resulting in disruption of historical species-environmental relationships. To measure changes between historical General Land Office surveys (1815 to 1850) and current USDA Forest Inventory and Assessment surveys (2004 to 2008), we compared composition, distribution, and site fact...
